Biker Parties – October

Posted by HWD on September 20, 2006

I’m often checking out the Biker Parties calendar of events, and this month there’s one that I know will be good, right in my region.

GOAT BROTHERS SWAP MEET & BIKE SHOW
Saratoga Springs City Center ,New York (518)583-3398 OR www.goatbrothers.com

This will be the first time I’ll be at that one, but I’ve heard great things about the Goat Brothers Swap Meet & Bike Show, so we’re looking forward to it.

The Biker Parties calendar is definitely not limited to my area, and has tours, runs, parties, and other motorcycle events listed from across the country. So if you wanted to see it, you can find it at:

You can click on the link to open the calendar in a new window from there. Great stuff!

My best to you,

Fair Season Is Over

Posted by HWD on September 19, 2006

I had a great time at the Columbia County Fair this year. I’d planned to go to a few others, but that didn’t work out for us, so this one had to suffice for my yearly “fair fix.” They had all the right things there for a county fair — livestock, poultry and other farm animals, food vendors, craft vendors including a glassblower we were delighted to find out hadn’t retired after all but had passed the business on to the next generation, informational demos on things like leather work (but not tooling), silversmithing, embroidering, old-style weaving, Civil War-era demos, and other art/craft work, and of course a range of musicians.

My favorite happenings at the Fair this year:

1. Being serenaded by a barbershop quartet. Hey, how often do you have that happen to you?
2. Wandering through the farm animals taking photos for art reference, even though I had to act like a fool to get certain animals’ attention for a decent photo.
3. Capturing the image of my sister and a cow appearing to share a hilarious joke. These are the sort of images we have to treasure in our photo albums.
4. Freshly made chocolate-covered strawberries.
5. Free hats.

My least favorite happening at the Fair:

1. By far, it was coming down with “walking” pneumonia, from which I’m only now recovering. Wow, that did me in.

My best to you,

HWD

All Space Thumbs

Posted by HWD on September 13, 2006

Does NASA need to redesign those suits a little, to allow for better extraterrestrial home repair? Not only are the American and Canadian astronauts slipping up and helplessly watching bolts and other small items float away on their International Space Station work, but I remember hearing about a recent incident with a 14 inch spatula drifting off into orbit. A new danger to ISS visitors? Potential death by spatula?

Bike, horse, jet, shuttle — a ride is a ride. And a rider needs the best gear possible, even more so when they have to fix or customize things.

So how about NASA and the Canadian Space Agency doing something nice for those astronauts, hmm, and improving your reputations a little? Possibly you folks can roundtable some ideas, maybe a robotic glove extension solution, at least? Any little thing that might give our astronauts a boost in doing their home improvements on the station would be fine.

This is definitely worth an eye roll, and you can’t really blame the astronauts.

My best to you,

HWD
